The Rose & Crown, 16th Century Inn
We are reputedly the oldest ale house in the Old High Street, the building
stands on one of the oldest sites in Hemel Hempstead, having originally been
a butchers, the owner brewed mead for his workers, as recorded in 1537, and as
the ale business increased this side of the enterprise gradually took over.
In recent times cattle were grazed on the common at the rear of the pub
(now Fig Tree Hill and part of Queensway) then slaughtered at the abattoir
next door, although many alterations and changes of business have occurred
some of the original tiling can still be seen.
The Rose and Crown is a thriving community pub where old meets new, in
clientele and atmosphere.
The pub is divided into four main areas:
Cosy Bar
There is a small cosy bar with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, an original fireplace
dating back to 1666 that has historical graffiti relating to Henry the Eighth,
which has been authenticated by historians and even featured on television.
Good home cooked food is served to you in this bar, with the traditional roast
dinner being our speciality although there is a varied menu to choosefrom. Further tables
are available in the 'Big bar' next door.
Big Bar
Our larger bar is entirely different, having a far more modern, open feel to
it with an original stripped wooden floor with room to stand and chat or just
enjoy your beer. You can also play the gaming machines whilst listening to your favourite
music from the 'jukebox'.
We occasionally have live bands playing in this area, which we advertise in
the local paper and locally on our notice boards, so look out for 'What's on'.
Outside Patio Area
We have a lovely outside patio which catches the sunlight throughout the day,
but also provides shade, peace and tranquillity to the weary worker. We have undertaken, (Feb/March 08), some changes to the patio to give it
a more homely garden feel with the addition of a pergola and planting beds for
trailing and climbing flowers. There is seating, soft lighting and heating for
the colder periods, which have improved following the renovations that have been
carried out.

New Look Coming to Marlowes and Queensway
Cutting edge thinking that says cars and pedestrians should use the same space
known as 'shared space'.
Under new plans the bottom of Queensway will be calmed and turned into' shared
space' to improve the pedestrian link between the town centre and Gadebridge
Park. The development will include a zone of shred space which will extend into
the Old High Street to encourage people into the area.
